Sub: In Defence of Doubting Everything

Dear Mr. Chandrachud,

In continuation with our previous letters/petitions to you,

we dared to write the following open letter, stimulated by your encouraging thoughts on counter-questions. The following speech (delivered just one day before the Babri Masjid Demolition Day) of yours is to be revisited in this context:

We are sure about the fact that you took your inspiration from the Srimad Bhagavad Gita:

tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ (4.34)

Special emphasis should be given on “paripraśnena sevayā”, which runs parallel to the spirit of the Indian Constitution, which says:

“…to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform.” [Article 51A(h)].

Thus, we have devoted ourselves to such “free thinking and merciless criticism” (a la Bhagat Singh) in the following open letter addressed to you:

We have simply questioned the locus of an incumbent Chief Justice (upholding the secular values of the Indian Constitution) in the domain of religious affairs, when India that is Bharat is severely attacked by a version of theocratic extremism: the ethnographic Hindutva, which has nothing to do with epistemological domain of South-East Asian philosophies. Moreover, former Justice N. V. Ramana stated⤡ that there is profound lack of intellectual debate or argumentation in the political arena since the past decades.

Hence, it is more than pertinent to become the argumentative Indians, following the Naiyāyika tradition of vāda-jalpa-vitanḍā. We are overemphasizing on the culture of vāda, which is argumentative exchange without a sense of victory or loss.

We are seeking nyāya, which is translated in English as “justice” as well as “ethos” and “rigorous logical reasoning”. Thus, we urge for a free and just social space, where justice thrives and there is no scope for dogmatic, politically motivated (or pressurized?) ritualistic performances.
